The old Fountain

The fontana tonna ("round fountain")

The fontana tonna ("round fountain")

The fountain is called the fontana tonna (“round fountain”) by the locals because of its circular shape. It was built under the pontificate of Pinolo V Parentucelli (1447-1455) to supply the village of Soriano (as shown by the papal insignia with the initials “n.pp.v.”).
The circular basin is composed in the centre of a Cispadane spindle (typical of Viterbo fountains) with four little masks and the fourfold effigy of the Pope’s coat of arms.
The monument, transferred in 1837 to Piazza G. Marconi below (formerly Piazza delle Erbe or del Mercato), was restored to its original site around the early 1900s.
